The man burns in...

Yeah yeah yeah, who the fuck cares about that - let's talk about how long til we leave for the playa?

For Mac users, there's a cool little dashboard widget out there that has a Burning Man countdown clock. It's been updated for 2006, and it's even been updated for all the shiny new Intel Macs out there. But what I like best about it is you can go into the configuration and change the date - so that instead of it being a countdown to when the man burns, you can count down until your departure date.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/burningmancountdown.html

If you really want to work yourself into a frenzy, look at your calendars and only count the full days you can devote to working on projects... I'm counting 13 days (including today, assuming I get off my ass).... holy fucking shit!!!

Anyone have recommendations or disrecommendations on local businesses that will service you Mac?

Specifically, has anyone dealt with a place called Total Mac, on Geary St. in the Laureal Hights - Inner Richmond area (near the Bridge theater. I took my laptop in for a screen repair because the guy returned my initial inquiry with what seemed to me a very reasonable quote, but I am having doubts about their competence. anybody have experience with this place?

I had this dream where I could plug my ipod to my powerbook at BM, and have my imported itunes playlists play from it, that's what the traktor website makes it seem like, i tried plugging it in, and its just a mess, has anyone done this successfully, of course, there's nothing in the manuals on how to setup an ipod with traktor.

Even if I have to set things up differently for BM, I still would like to try to make the ipod setup work for upcoming gigs in September, rather than lug my external lacie, so any leads and info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

A new website for the burner community

For the last three months, the better part of my life has been spent developing, integrating, designing and tweaking a new website for the burner community. For you Mac fans, it was all done on my G5 with Macromedia Studio, BBEdit and Transmit.

Finally, I am ready to publicly announce it.

It is a place where you can connect.

Share.

Participate.

Where there are no spectators.

Wouldn't be great if there was an easy to remember domain name? One that spoke to the community? A mantra that really made it all seem to click?

Something like: http://NoSpectators.com ?

NoSpectators.com is all about connecting, sharing and participating. In short, it is about not being a spectator. My hope is that it will become the central meeting place for people to gather, interact, discuss issues and participate in the greater burner community.

Virtually everything is interactive. Take a poll, or comment on a news story. Post an event, or start a vibrant discussion in the forums. Start your own journal/blog, or jump into the chatroom to chill. Post a link to your favorite burner website, or add your photos to the gallery. There will also be static content as well. It will offer tangible benefits that I think are needed in one centralized location.

There are no membership fees or ads (I'm paying for all of this, software, domain name, forum, webserver, etc., out of my own pocket). Unless you guys drain me of personal resources that need to be used for rent or food, the site will remain ad-free indefinitely. The site will not be censored. Topics that might be too controversial or politically subversive for the front page of other sites will find their home here. Commentary is directly related to the articles on the main site, so you can make your voice heard. The site can be searched, so you can find items that are of particular interest to you. The forum is the best software I could find. It offers numerous options and configurations. Popular posts can be kept visible and sorted for easy location. Posts can be rated by participants, and you can be notified when there are responses to threads that you subscribe to. And anyone can participate by submitting articles, posts, journals, photos, links and events.

And when I say anyone, I mean anyone. Your opinions don't have to concur with mine. Hell, I've even set up a section of the forum where radicals, trolls and flamers can feel at home. One of the sections of NoSpectators.com will be about politics and this will allow anyone to have a soapbox, whether I agree with your ideologies or not. There will be other sections that cover news, events, etc. My hope is that everyone contributes to the community, and this site will hopefully facilitate that.

You may ask why I am putting so much blood, sweat and tears into this. Well, this is my way of participating, my way of giving back to the community. Given my lack of mechanical skills, organizational leadership or artistic ability, it is unlikely that I'll ever build an art vehicle, run a theme camp or create Art on the playa. So, this is my humble way of gifting the other fifty-one weeks of the year.

Which brings up the question of your participation. How much do you want to be involved? Write an article now and then, or a regular column? Post in the forum? Or just use this as another outlet for your thoughts, your inspirations? Please let me know if you are interested in any or all of the above.

If you know anyone that would like to get involved, please share the site with your burner friends, family and loved ones. Everyone is invited, except for spectators of course! :)

I have to say I am really excited about this. I realize that NoSpectators.com may fail and no one will utilize the site. But something inside of me says that it could become something of real value to the burner community as a whole.

Burn brightly!
spectrums of incredulous mind-boggling properties
of individuals intercreating webs of intricate patterns
of art, thought, sound, and spirituality
reaching the divine through global risk-taking
transforming energy into massive spirit symphonies

Fellow vagabond angels
we gather together
What is a Curiosity Cabinet?

Curiosity Cabinets came into vogue in the 15th Century. They were wooden cabinets with many drawersthat were used to display a collection of artifacts, usually connected with a theme. The original cabinets were considered the pre-cursor to the museum. Many times curiosity cabinets were the only place for commoners to glimpse exotic pieces like the horn of a rhino or chinaware from the Orient. These miniature museums were an attempt to classify science and civilization while the world was still amorphous. Many of these classifications were a strange hybrid of religion, science and superstition that are now considered obsolete.

Our Curiosity Cabinet is very much in the tradition of the original cabinets. We are collectors and our display is a miniature museum of the mind. Our cabinet explores the unconscious and the artifacts that surface in our own psyches that are themselves difficult to define or explain. They are as exotic, strange and intriguing to us as the horn of a rhino was to a peasant living in 15th century England. In an attempt to display the unconscious and put the bits and pieces of our psyche in the confines of tiny drawers, the glimpses and suggestions will mean something different to every person that will explore the cabinet.

The Curiosity Cabinet of the Collective Unconscious will be on display in the Funhouse constructed underneath The Burning Man, September 2005. But, before it gets there check it out at The Hive.

I'm brand spankin' to this tribe, so apologies if this is a beaten horse issue, but I recently did the standard update to the iTunes 4.7.1 version and now my Traktor DJ software won't recognize any tunes that I've loaded into iTunes since the update.

Does anyone know why this is? New encryptions maybe...?

Any remedies to this hassle?

I installed the QT7 Pro upgrade on 10.3.9 about a day before upgrading to 10.4, and notice that it's a bit smoother under the new OS (which makes sense). Has anybody noticed any performance issues under QT7?

Hey guys,

If you are getting into music, let me know what you think of my new site:

http://www.createdigitalmusic.com

Yes, I'm cross-platform now -- had to be to write a book on digital audio coming out in the spring -- but I'm still a mac guy at heart and it shows on the site.

Really curious to know what you think, especially if you're a newcomer to this -- can you browse through and follow what I'm saying? Would you want more beginning-level content?

Anything I can do to help us create a burning tribal digital musical videological thing with our Macs, I will. I'm all about the Mac as a live performance instrument for music and video, and I get energy from sharing it with other folks! :-D

for some odd reason, I can't start up photoshop elements 3 on my screen..
is this program prone to crashing..Iv'e been at it for hours now, trying to determine what caused the crash, I can't even seem to find an installer log.
note:photoshop elements 3 works on my sisters screen..to many alias'?
I'm stumped.
again..it opens on My sisters screen but not mine, and funny it worked early this morning, the only thing I did was download a few fonts and throw them into the font folder..
I went into system preferences.. but still nothing..
I suppose it's more of a question I should ask on the apple site...
man alive, all I get is technical mumbo jumbo, that really makes no sense..
so I wonder do I delete the program and reinstall?
or just take the day off work..and hope that by tommorrow it magicly decides to boot up for me?
hm..

living the burning iLife: creating life as art

What i love about macs other then the possibilities for generating art, is their capacity to help me save time in my life, so that i can have more time to actually create art! I use my mac for everything: writing, learning, creating, developing, and archiving images, playing and messing around with music, keeping in touch with friends and muses, keeping track of what i am doing, what i want to do, and what is going on next weekend.

Wow, all that takes time, and in this day and age, it's hard to keep things in perspective. It takes a great deal of focus to not get lost in all the possibilities. But i've been using a mac for 5 years now, and during that time, i have spent much of those years learning how to utilize the mac to upgrade my life. Being digital can be time consuming, but it can also be time-saving, Streamlining my digital workflow by utilizing photoshop plug ins and various other photo software not only to create, but to automate, helps my whole life workflow. And i find that utilizing Microsoft Entourage not only for email, but for it's calendar/palm functions to keep track of projects and plans along with my palm pilot clie has helped tremendously with clearing some time, space and intention for getting my shit together enough to work towards making my dreams come true.

We are all trying to achieve so much more then our ancestors ever dreamed, so i would like this tribe to also be about utilizing the mac to generate more time for art. In this i feel i have alot to offer. People always trip that i'm such a techhead, cause i'm a girl, or whatever, it's funny.

i guess the only thing i don't like about doing everything on my mac, is that it can be hard to get off your ass sometimes, going out and dancing regularly is helpful. but i do think i should look into getting an exercise bike and rigging a little laptop tray, then i'd be more inspired to workout on a consistant basis, hehehe.

Mini-Mac

Let's discuss these new little boogers. I think it's a brilliant and long overdue solution from Apple. For two reasons.

1 - People Making The Switch
You know - the family that got an ipod and is now being exposed to all kinds of cool Mac-related stuff. Someone in the family tells mom or dad that they want to get a Mac to replace the family PC, but the sticker price of an iMac or PowerMac is just more than the family computer budget can bear. Enter the Mini-Mac. At $500 bucks (or more if you get the beefier model or customize with other goodies) you get a good solid bang for the buck, and you're able to enjoy the Mac user experience. Sure it has no mouse, keyboard, or monitor - but you can just unplug the stuff from your existing PC and voila!

2 - Art Installations
Let's face it. Video projectors and sound systems and video walls get to be fucking expensive. One might even say cost-prohibitive. Having to then add the cost of an iBook/PBook or an iMac/PowerMac solution just makes it even more challenging. And let's not forget that sometimes we want to take projects out into harsh environments ;-) where you don't dare risk bringing your only machine for fear of losing everything in a dust storm. For $500, this isn't a bad delivery system.

At first I dreaded the idea of the external power supply. Those bricks SUCK! But then as my roommate and I discussed it, I changed my mind. External supply means user replaceable. It also means that it minimizes the heat buildup and need for cooling/ventilation within the machine itself.

Your thoughts? Your impressions?

ANAHATA & TRIBAL TEMPLE
w/ special multimedia experience visuals by Arcane

For those of you going to Sea of Dreams LA, come check out the Tribal Temple/Urban Gypsy Dancers performance. Anahata has brought together a great show! We will be dancing with VJ Arcane's amazing computer animated visual imagery. I used Ableton Live to remix the music for one of the parts I'm dancing in, it was fun! We should be on from 11:40-12:00 in the main room, the Isle of the Sirens.

Slideshows in DVD Studio Pro

Has anyone else tried making slideshows in DVD Studio Pro?

I've been struggling with a disc of Burning Man photos for a couple months, and haven't yet found a workable solution. DVD Studio Pro 3 lets you make a slideshow of up to 99 photos in each chunk. You can set the amount of time it displays each picture, then which transition you'd like between photos (there's actually a decent assortment of transitions), and how long you'd like for each transition to take place. Sounds easy, right?

Not so much. I got it set up, burned the disc, and dropped it into a DVD player. On the first player, it actually worked well. I popped it into another DVD player, and while the disc plays, it for some reasons totally ignores the amount of time to display the picutre. So I get a disc of tansition, transition, transition, transition...

I've tried a few different options/settings when burning the disc, to no avail. I tried setting a delay for each picture (a different process than specifying how long to display the image), and while that does make the picture stay on screen longer, it causes the disc to completely ignore the transition effects between pictures.

In frustration, I'm taking the photos over to Final Cut Pro and making the slideshows in there, then will just use DVD Studio Pro to assemble the video streams. But this seems really cumbersome. Not to mention it chews up a ton of disc space. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hey there,

Anybody have any suggestions on where to buy a G4 dual tower (in LA area)? I'm taking a half step up from my current system because I don't want to lay down the cash for a G5. I'll be using this for making beeeutiful music so I figure I need at least a dual 867.

I'd rather buy it from a store or from a company online rather than an individual. I'd like to have some recourse just in case it's a dud. It's been so long since I upgraded I have little idea where I should go.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

music software for MAC

It's about time I got off my ass and updated the way I make music on my MAC. Until now I've been using Digital Performer 3.0 along with Reason 1.0. It's buggy and unsatisfying. What I want is the closest to what I call an "all in one". What that means to me is that I can easily go from drum machine to sampler to synth and waveform editor with little or no fuss. I've heard from a friend that the new version of Logic is worth checking out for this reason.

Anybody have any thoughts on what the easiest to use music software out there is?

Welcome Everybody!

I've been wanting to do this tribe for a while now, cause we have so many amazing artists in our community doing amazing, renovating, rejuvenating work on Macs, and so many artists who want to do amazing, renovating, rejuvenating work on macs, that I thought if there was a space for us all to pool our knowledge and resources with something like a tribe, we could all benefit from the digital rennaisance we could invoke. If we can reach out to each other in times of need, and overcome whatever obstacles we reach to transcend to new realities, that only can mean more amazing, renovating, rejuvenating works of art surrounding us, and more fun!

What I love about digital is that it while it is in it's digital form, it is always malleable, it can always be reworked, it can always evolve, it can always move forward, and expand. It can also be shared with others so easily that it can become interactive and collaborative experiences so quickly. We are constantly re-writing our future.

As for myself, I have always loved photography, poetry, music, video, dance. So for me, going digital is helping me bridge these different disiplines, and make them become interactive with each other. I've been in love with Photoshop for a while now, and i know that pretty well, and have done some collaborative experimental video work in FCP; working on a website, love the cyberworld; but right now my main intoxicant has been learning as much as i can about music, and have just started learning Ableton Live and Traktor. I am looking into ways of bringing more digital multimedia into performance rituals and dance, and help bring more multi-dimensional digital experiences to parties, gatherings, and of course, Burning Man!

So I'd love to read about what you all are doing or wanting to do, or check out your work or digital events. So tell us about it!
