Who has the best tip(s) for bringing the laptop to the playa and keeping its innards from turning to burnt powder?
Common sense is just to leave it at home but shit- Tipper and all kinds of other people seem to pull it off without a bringing home a "dead book".
Suran wrap? vinyl casing? plastic bubbles the size of dreams?
Let's hear it ~

Re: Playa-proofing the laptop
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 11:11 AMI am planning on bringing my Pismo Powerbook to the playa. What comes to mind is definitely saran wrap, but considering the heat vents need ventilation, I was thinking of taping dust filters, or coffee filters to any vents. I'm going to try to put all my music in my computer, but in case i have to bring an external had drive or ipod, I'm thinking of sticking them in a natural fiber sack.
Also a month ago, I DJed at an outdoor gathering, and i could barely see the screen with the sunlight shining right on it, so I was thinking of getting this www.hoodmanusa.com for daytime sets. It ain't pretty but it looks like it might solve that problem, and maybe offer some protection too. -

Re: Playa-proofing the laptop
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 11:53 PMI'll recommend that aside from stuff like saran wrap, you get a reflective tarp of some kind.
Home depot sells tarps that are silver on one side, brown on the other. Silver side up will reflect a lot of the heat (if for some reason you can't avoid being under some kind of shade), and the brown underside helps shield you from daylight so you can pop underneath it to see the screen when you need it. Get a small tarp, then cut it down to size.
When not in use, keep the laptop in a big freezer bag. Larger grocery stores should have an assortment, they have ziploc bags that will hold chickens and turkeys and stuff - even a 17 inch should fit. You want to make sure it's airtight, of course.
And of course a Kensington lock will help you keep your gear secure.

Re: Playa-proofing the laptop
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 11:10 AMi would suggest, a keyboard cover which is i think rubber, and thus, you can find them at just about any mac store... ( i go to the one on Melrose, called Melrose Mac.) i know they carry them there....
also, you might wanna think about a piece of foam, to pad the bottom, and where the air vents are located, u just need to cut out the foam...
plus, the foam pad will help to prtect from scratches, heat, etc....
hope any of that helps yOu...

Re: Playa-proofing the laptop
Tue, December 6, 2005 - 2:20 PMHot case Jordan.
No problems with the m-audio interface?
I ended up just sealing all of the vulnerable areas with painters tape and covering the keyboard and screen with suran wrap. I used it during a few a pretty hearty dust
storms and was quite forlorn when I got home to pull it
out of my bag and see its filthy condition- but WALLAH-
it booted right up and I haven't had a problem since.
