Looking into picking up an external drive to carry mostly music files from my powerbook. Anyone have any recommendations on which ones are good?

Re: External Storage
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 10:16 PMI wish I had a LaCie drive to love....
I've got a Fantom drive, and it's so-so at best. But it was in my budget at the time. I know a number of people who use LaCie drives for personal and professional use, and they're pretty much universally adored.

Fri, May 12, 2006 - 2:42 PMCorrect me if I'm wrong but wouldn't I have to use some cumbersome software interface to move files from the iPod to the laptop? I thought that was one of the downsides of iPods....? -

Sun, May 14, 2006 - 5:25 PMI don't know what it's like on the PC, but on the Mac an iPod mounts as a drive. Through the itunes preferences, you simply check the "enable disk use" option and bam... external drive.

Re: External Storage
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 8:18 AMI constantly use my ipod as storage. Nothing tough about dragging and dropping stuff in and out of it. Not much space though and not a substitute for an external hard drive.

Thu, May 25, 2006 - 1:45 AMI think the confusion in your perception might be caused by the fact that you would need to have a third party software to take out mp3s from any ipod that is part of an itunes library. The hard drive functionality works outside of whatever space you are using on your ipod through itunes exactly as a hard drive, but your itunes library would be off limits except to listen to. During those times that we must extract mp3s out of ipods, PodWorks is an excellent tool to have handy, www.scifihifi.com/podworks/ -

Re: External Storage
Thu, May 25, 2006 - 11:29 AMipods are great for listening to music and handy for throwing stuff on temporarily when i'm around town, but ipods definately have alot more going for them then just being hard drives, if you just need a hard drive, can't beat LaCie. They've got all kinds of configurations and prices, from the basic more gig for your money desktop drives, from 160 gigs to up to a terabyte (a thousand gigabytes) to the best portable options I've seen that don't need power adapters, if you are looking for portability. They've got 8 gig credit card sized usb keys, palm-sized drives, & rugged all terrain hard drives up to 120 gigs that could withstand even burning man at www.lacie.com -
